Gutter Repair & Refurbishment

Gloucestershire – Industrial Valley Gutter Refurbishment

Industrial Profiled Roofing

Elite Waterproofing

Project Overview

Elite Waterproofing undertook the refurbishment of an industrial valley gutter situated between two pitched roof slopes fitted with solar photovoltaic panels.

The existing gutter exhibited signs of weathering, standing water, accumulated debris and vegetation growth, indicating the need for maintenance and waterproofing improvements.

The project involved addressing the condition of the existing drainage channel and applying a protective liquid waterproofing system to the gutter surface.

The works were undertaken within the restricted working area between the solar installations, where careful consideration of the adjacent roof coverings, photovoltaic equipment and existing drainage arrangements was required.

The Challenge

The existing industrial valley gutter had deteriorated over time and was exhibiting signs of inadequate maintenance.

Vegetation growth, accumulated organic material and standing water were visible within the gutter channel, indicating that water flow and drainage performance required attention.

The gutter was positioned between two extensive solar photovoltaic arrays, creating a restricted working environment and limiting direct access to sections of the drainage system.

Its location also presented additional considerations regarding the protection of adjacent solar panels, mounting equipment and electrical components during refurbishment.

If left unaddressed, the condition of the gutter could contribute to further deterioration, drainage restrictions and an increased risk of water ingress into the building.

Survey & Assessment

The existing valley gutter and surrounding roof areas were reviewed to establish the condition of the drainage channel and identify areas requiring attention.

The photographs document the following conditions:

- Standing water and accumulated surface contamination within the gutter.
- Vegetation growth and organic debris obstructing sections of the drainage channel.
- Weathered gutter surfaces and existing joints or sectional details.
- Restricted access caused by photovoltaic panels installed on both adjoining roof slopes.
- The need to preserve the integrity of the surrounding roof coverings and solar installation.

The refurbishment approach was intended to improve the gutter's protective waterproofing surface while maintaining its existing drainage arrangement.

Proposed Solution

A liquid-applied waterproofing refurbishment approach was selected for the existing industrial valley gutter.

The proposed treatment involved preparing the gutter channel and applying a continuous protective coating across the existing surface and relevant details.

The system was intended to provide a renewed waterproofing barrier, including protection at vulnerable joints and interfaces where water penetration can occur.

Particular consideration was given to the confined working area between the solar photovoltaic arrays and the need to avoid unnecessary disturbance to the surrounding roof and solar equipment.

The objective was to refurbish the existing gutter rather than undertake a complete gutter replacement.

Works Undertaken

The refurbishment involved works to the existing industrial valley gutter located between the roof-mounted solar photovoltaic arrays.

The documented sequence included:

- Inspection of the existing gutter channel and surrounding roof details.
- Identification of accumulated vegetation, debris and areas of standing water.
- Preparation of the gutter surface for the proposed waterproofing treatment.
- Attention to gutter joints and relevant drainage details as part of the refurbishment.
- Application of a liquid-applied protective waterproofing coating to the gutter channel.
- Completion of a continuous coated surface along the treated gutter area.

The final photograph shows the gutter following application of a uniform dark-grey protective finish, with the surrounding solar photovoltaic panels remaining in position.

Project Outcome

The refurbishment produced a continuous, protective coated surface along the industrial valley gutter situated between the existing solar photovoltaic arrays.

The finished gutter presents a substantially more uniform surface than the earlier photographs, which showed weathering, standing water and vegetation growth.

The liquid-applied treatment was intended to improve the gutter's weatherproofing performance and protect vulnerable areas of the existing drainage channel.

By refurbishing the existing gutter, the project provided an alternative to complete replacement while retaining the surrounding roof-mounted solar installation.

Ongoing inspection and maintenance remain important to help prevent future debris accumulation and drainage restrictions.
